Understanding Obesity

Obesity is a life-threatening disease about 31% of the American population or about 68 million people.

Overweight refers to an excess body weight compared to set standards.  The most common measurement of obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI).  While your BMI doesn’t measure actual body fat, it correlates well with the degree of obesity.  It is not used along for diagnosis but is useful as a general guideline.
