Professional and Personal Background Michigan State University Dr. Hedlund is a member of the following professional medical organizations: Dr. Hedlund was born and raised in the Chicago area where he was a three-sport athlete in high school and served as captain of the hockey team. While an undergraduate student at Bethel University, he was named an all-conference hockey player, elected a vice president in the Student Government, and became a member of the science fraternity, Sigma Zeta. When not practicing Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine at mmpc, he has volunteered his time on medical mission trips to Appalachia, New Orleans and Arizona. He has also been a research associate at the Northwestern University Department of Pediatrics in Chicago. Dr. Hedlund also serves as a team physician on the medical staff at Rockford High School. He is married with three children and enjoys golf, running, water sports, traveling, and hiking Michigan's nature trails with his active family. He is Board Certified as a member of the Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. | ||||

Professional and Personal Background Dr. Susan Day is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. She completed her orthopaedic surgery training at the Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. Dr. Day recently completed a two-year Jahnigen Career Development Grant funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation in Geriatric Orthopedics. She is currently a staff attending physician with the Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Residency Program and a clinical instructor with Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine, Department of Surgery and a clinical instructor with Grand Valley State University. Dr. Day's research interests include nutrition, fracture healing and musculoskeletal care for older adults. She is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). | ||||

Professional and Personal Background Dr. Melissa DeNiel specializes in sports medicine orthopaedics. She adds a special dimension to her surgical attributes through her first-hand experience in dealing with injuries as an athlete playing Division I basketball for Loyola University of Chicago. While at Loyola she tore her ACL and underwent arthroscopic surgery and reconstruction of the ligament. She recovered and returned to play basketball at a competitive level. She also participated in competitive racquetball and bodybuilding. Dr. DeNiel understands an athlete's determination and desire to compete even when facing injury and having limited abilities because of pain. After completing her degree in Physics at Loyola, Dr. DeNiel attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin. She then completed her orthopaedic surgery training at the Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. Following residency, Dr. DeNiel served as sports medicine and arthroscopy fellow at the Center for Athletic Medicine in Chicago. She is currently a staff attending with the Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program and is the head team physician for Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Dr. DeNiel is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). She works closely with Barbara, her assistant, who participates in patient care and surgery scheduling. Barbara has worked in the area of clinical orthopaedics for the past 21 years. | ||||

Professional and Personal Background Kevin is a member and served on the board of the Michigan Academy of Physician Assistants (MAPA), is a member of Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery (PAOS) and the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA.) Kevin earned two Bachelors and a Masters degree from Central Michigan University where he also served as Physician Assistant Class President from 2004-2006. Kevin's passion for sports medicine began to develop when he was a four-sport athlete in high school. He was an all-conference defensive end for Grant (MI) High School. At the collegiate level, he played club hockey at Central Michigan University and competed in several intramural sports.
