    Vitamin A for Eye Health 

  • Vitamin A plays a vital role in vision, immune function, proper bone and tooth function and cardiovascular health
  • Vitamin A is especially important in vision health because it generates pigments necessary for the retina to maintain good vision
  • Recommended daily intake of vitamin A:
    • 3000 IU for men
    • 2300 IU for women
  • Two forms of vitamin A: beta-carotene & retinol (active form)
  • Examples:

    1 cup milk= 465 IU       ½ cup sweet potatoes = 3200 IU

    ½ cup broccoli= 250 IU   ½ cup carrots = 1100 IU

  • Vitamin A supplementation is used to treat some forms of cancer and the degenerative eye disease retinitis pigmentosa
  • Recommended intake should not exceed 10,000 IU per day of retinol form supplements
