MONTGOMERY, MD, NAMED "WOMAN PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR" BY MICHIGAN STATE MEDICAL SOCIETY Carole L. Montgomery, MD, a Grand Rapids internal medicine specialist, has been named "Woman Physician of the Year" by the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS). Doctor Montgomery, who has been practicing at Michigan Medical, PC, since 1995, was recognized by her peers for her work in medical education and quality improvement. She was among 12 women physicians nominated from throughout the state. Doctor Montgomery has practiced hospital-based medicine at Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids since completing her internal medicine residency there in 1990.
"Doctor Montgomery has committed countless hours to her community through educating resident physicians, nurses and physician assistants," said Chief Medical Officer of Michigan Medical, PC, and MSMS past president John M. MacKeigan, MD, in his nomination of Doctor Montgomery. "She started the hospitalist division at Spectrum Health before the term and specialty of 'hospitalist' was known or developed." Doctor Montgomery is currently the Physician Site Leader of the Hospitalist Division at Michigan Medical, PC. She has served on a variety of quality and process improvement teams at Spectrum Health Hospital, as well as serving on Spectrum Health Hospital’s Board Quality and Safety Committee for the past two years. She also currently serves on the Quality Coordinating Council at Michigan Medical, PC. Additionally, Doctor Montgomery is an Associate Professor at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine where she earned her medical degree in 1987. "Physicians, hospitals, patients, and payers all want to ensure that everyone receives the highest quality care safely and efficiently when they are in the hospital," said AppaRao Mukkamala, MD, a Flint radiologist and president of the 15,000-member MSMS. "Doctor Montgomery is among those on the leading edge of this effort. We appreciate her on-going commitment to quality health care." Doctor Montgomery will receive formal recognition as "Woman Physician of the Year" during the 143rd annual meeting of the MSMS House of Delegates on May 2-4 in Dearborn where 400 physician delegates from across Michigan will gather to set policy on a variety of health care issues regarding public health, health care delivery and medical ethics.
